Celebrating the 4th

In just a two days, America will be celebrating her 237th birthday and I thought I’d offer a little historical comparison.  For a good number of months and years leading up to July 4, 1776 a group of colonists, not unlike many of today’s Tea Party movement, found they were not very happy with what was going on.

They were doctors and lawyers, merchants and farmers, business owners, fishermen, and just regular people doing their very best to get by.  During their struggle to make ends meet, there was a tyrant by the name of King George III who, much like our current president was sending down demands, edicts, taxation, and policies that didn’t sit well with most of the colonists.

They did their best to reason with the king given the circumstances.  They sent representatives, they spoke to local governors, they wrote articles and letters, but the king wouldn’t hear of it.  The king, again, much like our current leadership, was fat, dumb, and happy; and he went back and forth between ignoring and trying to crush the opposition to his rule.

Well, the colonists, much like today’s Tea Party movement, wanted a peaceful arrangement, and were patient to a fault.  However, they were keeping a close eye on the king’s movements and actions, and they took notes.  Additionally, much to their peril, they also met, organized into groups, and discussed their mutual concerns and dis-satisfaction.  In a word, there was revolution in the air.

Finally, on July 4, 1776, after much deliberation and thought, the king had crossed the line and the colonists had taken all they were willing to take.  They had very carefully put to writing a list of 27 grievances, known as the ‘Declaration of Independence’ with the king seeking among other things, complete autonomy from British rule.  Needless to say, and not unexpectedly, this did not sit well with the king, and just like that our War for Independence was at hand.

As an important side note, it should be pointed out that a very short pamphlet type book titled, ‘Unfit to Rule’ was recently written that outlines very clearly that our current president is committing all of the original 27 grievances and more that the Colonists had with the king.  You may obtain a free downloadable copy of this book by clicking on the hyper-link below:

"Unfit to Rule"

There aren’t a ton of differences between then and now.  The Colonists that disagreed with the king, that were without a doubt a lot like today’s Tea Party members, did not have 100% support of the populace.  Many, called Tory’s, that might have been a lot like today’s liberals, were loyal to the king and everything he stood for; they were dead against any thought of revolt, and stood in the way of the revolutionaries.

While I sit here and write this, I believe that the USA is the greatest country ever conceived in the history of mankind.  Contrary to revisionist viewpoints, our founders were great and wise men, mostly Christian, that believed in and understood the importance of making God, our Creator the cornerstone of the nation.  Just as our founders would have, many of us believe and know that is the single most important reason why we have endured as long as we have, and a simple look at our history proves this out.

Last month, I wrote about the extreme distress our nation is enduring at present and how I wear my flag lapel pin upside in an effort to bring that distress to the attention of those I come into contact with.  Some understood, some not.

In any case, I am as proud today as I’ve always been to be an American, and I believe with a return to our Christian roots and the right leaders following the plan of our founders, we can continue to be that ‘shining City on the Hill.’

God bless you and Happy Birthday America.
