Scuola Vecchia Pizza at Delray Beach

We took a drive down to Delray Beach a couple of weeks ago to visit Scuola Vecchia Pizza.  Living way up in unincorporated West Palm Beach, I don’t deliberately make the drive to Downtown Delray that often, however a lot of people have been raving about this place which only opened a little over a year ago.

I kind of wish they hadn’t been raving so much, because, maybe unfairly to the place, I allowed myself to set my expectations very high, and while it was decent, (and this isn’t a trashing)….meh, it was kind of like a first date; I either can’t wait until I see her again or don’t really care if I ever do, and this was one of those times.

The owner, a very gracious woman named Sharon, makes it her business to greet every guest personally with a firm handshake.  I think it’s impossible not to like her immediately.

Over the course of about an hour, our group grew from only a few to the original plan of quite a few.  The place is very intimate in size and tastefully decorated, with an open kitchen that has a wonderful wood fired brick oven, so that you can watch them create the pizzas.  I have to say, I’ve never built or seen anyone build a pizza off of a ‘peel’ like that before, however they manage to get it done.

After the entire group arrived and was seated, we all just pretty much starting ordering and eating.  I had the Prosciutto de Parma Pizza.  I liked it; I didn’t love it, but I liked it.  I might suggest sprinkling a few capers and a drizzle of Olive Oil to round it out.

I think the service was okay, but not great; I would have ordered another beer or a glass of wine had I been asked, but no one ever came by and asked if anyone wanted anything else after the pizza arrived, so I settled for the glass of water sitting in front of me.

Finally, I would recommend this place if you’re in Delray Beach and in the mood for a pizza, and I may revisit one day when/if in Delray Beach; but would I drive out of my way again to visit as I do my favorite Italian eatery in Ft. Lauderdale.....?

Over all, I give Scuola Vecchia Pizza a 3.8 on my 5 Star dining scale.  You will find them at 522 East Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach and their phone number is 561-865-5923.
