Nola's Pizza. Almost Boston in Greenacres...

Just under three years ago, I lived and used to take daily long walks around Greenacres, Florida.  On many of those walks I used to pass by a certain pizza joint called Nola’s that doesn’t look like much given its location in front of a local Walmart in a small strip mall.  In fact, I’m not gonna lie, the overall area is sort of sketchy, to say the least.

That said, as anyone who knows me will tell you, I like a lot of different cuisines, but pizza is on the top of my food pyramid, followed closely by bacon, pasta, and any sort of “parm” so I’m surprised I never stopped in.

Anyway, until very recently, when a friend of mine took the time to rave about this place several times, I never gave it a thought, but I did put it in the back of my mind to visit whenever I might be in the area.  I tried to do just that three weeks ago on my way home from a trip to Ft. Lauderdale; but alas, I found out just as I was getting off the Turnpike that they are not open on Mondays.

As it turns out, I had to be in the area today to have some maintenance done on my car and decided this was the day to give this place a whirl.

I am so glad I did, because I’m a good cook in my own right, and being transplanted from Boston and used to the great food up there, I am something of a food snob.  Therefore, I’ve tried a lot of different pizza joints down here, and while some are decent, most are marginal at best.

I ordered a simple cheese pizza with mushrooms, (fresh of course) on half of it, and while I waited for it I chatted with James the manager, who tells me they’ve been in the same spot since 1980 and have seen a lot of changes over the years.

My friend who did the raving was spot on.  I liked everything about this pizza.  The cheese blend was very satisfying, the sauce had just the right hint of sweetness, there was a perfect pinch of oregano, and the crust was so good I would gladly eat it by itself and just dip it in some oil and garlic.

I didn’t see any, but the sign in the window says they have slices, which is fine but one slice or even two of this outrageously delish pizza, would not suffice after the first bite.  I also grabbed one of the homemade brownies, which was more fudge than brownie that was screaming at me from the counter.  It also screams for a scoop of French Vanilla Ice Cream on top, but I digress.

As I said above, I used to pass by this place several times per week.  I’ll never simply pass by it again, because I now have them on speed dial and whenever I’m in the area, I’m stopping to get a pie and I suggest that all my pizza loving friends do the same.

You’ll find Nola’s at 6272 Forest Hill Blvd., (next door/in front of Walmart).  Their phone number is 561-964-3518, and you’ll find their website and menu by clicking here.
