Micky Dolenz Dazzles West Palm Beach

What an evening in West Palm Beach on Sunday.  Starting around 4:30, something near 2000 people turned out to hear Rock n’ Roll legend and lead singer of ‘The Monkees,’ Micky Dolenz take to the stage and perform not only some of his greatest hits, but also some great hits from artists he’s known through the years.  Not the least of which was Jimi Hendrix, who had opened for The Monkees when they were on tour before he made it big himself.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard he’d be singing; but being of age when The Monkees first hit way back in the 60’s, I have of course always been a fan, and I wasn’t about to miss a chance to see him perform live.  Besides, it gave me an opportunity to hang out with some of my best buds, smoke a decent cigar, and just chill out for a few hours, which is something none of us get enough of anymore.

The warm up group, Pee Wee Lewis and the Hues, (who I believe will go the way of Jimi Hendrix from what I saw and heard) was astounding and got the crowd ready to rock for the main event, and I’m here to say that from the moment he hit the stage, Micky Dolenz didn’t miss a beat.  When so many aging rock stars should probably stick to late night infomercials endorsing hair transplants or car wax, Micky sounded a lot like he did back in the day; his timing was right on the mark, he had every note and lyric mastered, and he danced around that stage back and forth with all the youth and vigor of a man half his age.

Between songs, he mentioned some of the other legends The Monkees met along the way, including British Royalty; not the Queen and her brood, but The Beatles themselves.

I left the park being very surprised that it was a totally free concert, and I believe that Micky, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork, (the remaining 'Monkees') will have no problem filling every venue on their soon to begin National Tour.  Great job giving us all a taste of what's to come Micky.  Thank you for the wonderful concert and the trip down memory lane, and best wishes for a safe and successful tour.
