Ethos: Your opinion matters, or does it?

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

I have been thinking a great deal about ethics lately, whether it be in politics or journalism so I decided to look further at the definition of the word itself.

According to wikianswers.com the word ethics is derived from the Greek word Ethos. Ethos is defined as "the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution"

I had to ponder this one for a moment because there is often a proverbial line in the sand we as writers, journalist, bloggers (pick your title) will not cross when writing about either fact or opinion news.  Where does ethics come into play?  Perhaps subject matter or perhaps further the comments one allows to be made about your opinion.

Florida Primary is August 14th - VOTE!

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

VOTEI really like the fact that the Olympics and the Primary Election in Florida are so close together.  I hope while we build American pride with our team spirit and athletes we motivate a few couch potatoes to get out and vote at the very least.  Of course for those of us already out there volunteering, we are still knocking doors and at times getting that 'deer in the headlights' look when we mention the date August 14th in Florida it can be a little mind boggling.  Yes, there is a primary election, one might have heard about it, but well not everyone has heard the call.

Not sure the rock under which some hide, but there are still registered republican voters who have walked right into the polls without a single bit of research on the candidates for whom they cast a vote.  I often wonder how do they select?  Names they like, signs they see as they drive into the parking lot or is there more eenie meenie miney moe going on than we all think in that voting booth.  If I am on a rant it's because I realize how precious the right to vote is for Americans and the price paid for us to have this right, so I want at least a little effort on the part of the voter in selecting a candidate.  I'd like to say I am grateful for those who call and run down their ballot with me over the phone, and I am honored to have their respect and trust, at least they made the effort to fill it out in advance.  Of course maybe the average voter is suffering from campaign fatigue and can't bear another minute of television ads.  It's a bit like hurricane fatigue, but you get it from incessant mailers and robocalls.

Whatever you decide I will always say that voting is better than not voting that is a given, but please take a moment to care about the selection.  Vote smart, and if you are a republican voting in an upside down district your primary selection will face a general election.  Take a moment to look at the bigger picture.  Also get to know your candidates, they want to know you and if they don't then perhaps you need to reconsider that selection immediately.  In the end just vote please, and republicans you have a party office somewhere in your area where information and assistance is always available.  So absentee, early or election day GET OUT THE VOTE!

Gov. Chris Christie's Advice: Leave Nothing in the Tank

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

I have never been accused of being quiet, but when Gov. Chris Christie told Florida delegates and attendees to "leave nothing in the tank" on Thursday morning as he addressed a breakfast event, I understood not only did we need to cheer from the convention floor, we need to give this presidential election everything we got.

With all that we have, with all that we can give we must campaign and reach out to every American to elect the Romney-Ryan ticket in November.  The time is now and as the saying goes if not me and if not you, then who?  And I do mean every American, all party politics must be put aside and we must reach out to voters to understand the implications of four more years of an Obama administration.  Unless of course you are for the Affordable Healthcare Act or expanding government to levels that boggle the mind and solving the debt with tax increases, then I suggest you start working for the free enterprise and limited government ticket that Romney-Ryan represents, and keep an America we recognize.  Four more years of Obama and we get the CHANGE just not the HOPE.

If you don't have your game plan yet I urge you to volunteer and do so immediately.  It's the fourth quarter and we are marching down the field to the goal line.  Coming off the convention we are inspired by great speakers and by an amazing team in Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.  Let's take this enthusiasm and inject it into everyone we meet and reach across party lines while doing so.  We need to win Florida and we need everyone to do their part to get the facts and the truth out to the voters.

We can't sit by and be quiet and hope for the best outcome, we have to be in the game.  If you don't know where to start, then find the local Victory Center in your area and call or stop by to learn how you can be involved.  Phone calls, sign waving, canvassing door to door, rally's and a willingness to speak to people are just some of the things you can do to serve as a volunteer in this election.  This is not the time to be apathetic and let others determine this race, this is your time to leave nothing in the tank and I hope everyone is running on fumes November 6, 2012 because you gave everything possible.

Gutless

Media Matters senior fellow Eric Boehlert made news this week by immensely insulting our Navy SEALs, saying that they "don't have guts" if they won't admit they're "anti-Obama." This is coming from someone who has his job solely because those SEALs and the rest of our military risk everything to protect this country and the freedoms we enjoy in it.

President Obama has yet to condemn Eric Boehlert's disrespectful comments; this is hardly shocking, though, since when Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in 2011 by our SEALs, President Obama stepped in and tried to claim  most of the credit. An unidentified current SEAL told Newsmax:

"Obama wasn’t in the field, at risk, carrying a gun. As president, at every turn, he should be thanking the guys who put their lives on the line to do this. He does so in his official speeches because his speechwriters are smart.  But the more he tries to take the credit for it, the more the ground operators are saying, "Come on, man!"  It really didn’t matter who was president. At the end of the day, they were going to go."

Hail Al Sharpton...king of Demagogues

Written by Dominique Feldman on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

The demagoguery has run amuck, and its “lord and savior,” Al Sharpton, is on fire! Why not? The rabble-rousing was a roaring success.  I have just read the press release announcing the placement of Sharpton’s visage, along with that of Joseph Goebbels, and Che Guevara in the OED and Merriam-Webster next to the definition of “Demagogue.”  Well, ok, he’s not quite at that stature, but he IS paying his dues.  For over thirty years, the Right Reverend Sharpton of the Newer Dukedom of York has been regaling the masses with his cynically manipulative brand of racial divisiveness.  The most recent edition to his body of nausea inducing work was his claim that the GOP is somehow responsible for high unemployment among Black Americans.

It’s difficult to translate his rhetoric into English, but he’s apparently calling on …well, somebody…to “take on these [Republican] Governors and Mayors as well as the private sector on why the private sector is getting all these contracts and bailouts and not hiring and correcting the disproportionate amount of their employment does not touch our community and have the President and them us in that.” Basically, his argument--if one can dignify it as such--is that because Black Americans are more highly represented in Public Sector jobs than in private, the reduction in Public Sector spending, by Republicans, is somehow deliberately targeting the Black Community.

Excuse me, I just need to take a few warm-up swings, and crack my knuckles before entering the ring…ahhh, that’s better!  Now allow me to address the foolishness that has come before us…publicly, and with the abetment of local and national media coverage.  And yes, I WILL hold the Mass Media responsible for their part in the promulgation of these histrionics.  After all, they actually pay the man, Monday through Friday, and sometimes on weekends to spew his nonsense…and nonsense it is.
