Retirees build for Paul Ryan and say no to 'mediscare'

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

We hear "You didn't build… that" a great deal since Obama's gaffe of late when commenting on business and his suggestion that no business was built by anyone without the government's role.  This past weekend while attending the Paul Ryan rally in The Villages, Florida I watched the crowd and a very different perspective came to mind.

It's no secret to Floridians The Villages, which encompasses Sumter County and parts of Lake and Marion counties is a force among retirement communities, but it is also home to a number of retirees who did "build that".  Let's be real when I viewed the generation of residents who had gathered with signs and flags, many dressed in red, white and blue, it was evident not only did they build their businesses, but this generation of Americans were quite instrumental in building America as the greatest nation.  And, from the looks on their faces and the reaction of the crowd, they do not intend to let what they built go down without a fight.

After all this generation is comprised of proud Americans many of whom are veterans and who not only served their country militarily, but then went on to build businesses all across America and retire to the American dream and enjoy their golden years.  When singer Lee Greenwood sang his signature I'm Proud to be an American men and women shed tears and lips trembled to fight back the emotions of what may very well be a grandfather or grandmother worried about the future for a generation of grandchildren or great-grandchildren they worked so hard to build.  A future built to give the next generation every opportunity for success, now riddled with uncertainties over debt and uncontrolled government spending.  Watching I have to admit I was smiling, with a tearful eye.

Why? Because I saw what will decide this election in November, and I saw an energized group of older Americans who know how to build a strong nation, and will show up to vote.  They will take this election very serious and Obama if I were you I would have a clear understanding that your 'mediscare' tactics are not working.  Paul Ryan is doing an excellent job of getting out the message that we must reform Medicare while you have, well basically Joe Biden, not even a contest to these people.  They like Paul Ryan and his Mom, Betty is part of their generation.  When Paul Ryan addressed the crowd on Saturday in reference to his Mom's own small business he said, "And mom -- you did build that".  I saw a generation of Americans who agreed that they built their business, not the government and will make sure that opinion is voted out of our government at every level.  If the road to the White House truly leads through Florida, it will certainly trek through The Villages, and Main Street likes Romney-Ryan.

Same Debate - Different Tragedy: 2nd Amendment rights and Costas thinks we should Punt

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

Most of us did not expect to have football commentary crossover to our constitutional rights, but thanks to Bob Costas that is what football fans were delivered when he commented Sunday night on gun control.  This after Kansas City NFL player Jovan Belcher's tragic murder/suicide this past weekend.

I have very little to say on this debate that wasn't written in a previous op-ed this year and you can certainly read my thoughts (Tragedy and the 2nd Amendment Debate), but once again those who oppose the 2nd Amendment find their voice by skewing tragic events into "if he didn't posses a gun".

Conservatives took to social media and voiced their immediate discontent with Costas, who is known for his commentary, and the hashtag #BobCostasLogic was born.  Twitter was filled with comments about the logic of blaming an inanimate object, instead of blaming the people who use the object for a bad purpose.

So let's be very, very clear:  Guns don't kill people, people kill people.  That's my logic and I am good with that thought.  My constitution should be upheld as is, and my football doesn't need a political agenda.  Winners don't always punt on 4th down, so Mr. Costas we will just keep playing by the rules of our constitution.

SB 1070 Ruling adds Accountability to Federal Government's Role

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

After yesterday's ruling on SB 1070 by the Supreme Court I reflected on upholding the Federal Laws over the states legislation and I found this quote by Thomas Jefferson.

"The most sacred of the duties of a government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all citizens."

What about non-citizens?  Now that we know without a doubt the Federal government is responsible for upholding the laws applicable to illegal immigration and the states rights are lessened by this ruling, I expect accountability to follow.  It's just my humble opinion, but if you own it then solve the problems and do so without bureaucratic failure.

For too long the Federal government wants to intrude in matters better left to the states, in this case I wonder what resolution will follow now that we know who is clearly defined as in charge of the enforcement of immigration laws?  Amnesty or accountability, let's hope they get it right.

Special Thanks to Some Special Volunteers in Florida

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

This weekend kicked off early voting in Florida and I was thrilled to spend some time on Saturday with two of my favorite friends and activists (The Conservative Divas), Daria DiGiovanni and Ellen Snyder.  I appreciate their efforts and I know minds were changed and votes were cast for Romney because of the conversations, and encouragement they gave to many South Florida voters.

I for one appreciate every person who volunteered and continues to volunteer for RomneyRyan2012 as we spend 8 days in early voting.  If you have a few hours to give at any location throughout Florida, I encourage you to make the time.  Just drive to the nearest early voting location and contribute your time.

In Palm Beach County I want to recognize Andrea Plescia and her husband Frank for working tirelessly, not just this week, but for months.  I know our Veterans for Romney Coalition is stronger because of their efforts.

Women for Mitt will be conducting a large sign waving rally on Friday, November 2nd from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. in Palm Beach county and all are welcome (that means guys we want your help).  Thanks to Women Impacting the Nation, the Palms West Republican Club, and my co-captains, Janeen Capizola and Julie Scutti for your help with this event.

Signs will be available at the rally locations which are as follows:

NORTH COUNTY:  PGA Blvd. & Military Trail

CENTRAL COUNTY:  Lake Worth Road & US 441

SOUTH COUNTY:  Glades Road & St. Andrews Blvd.

Thanks again Divas and for allowing me to be the adopted Diva this weekend in Delray Beach.  Read Daria's Blog about the overall experience via the link below:

Strength not Weakness: Foreign Policy & Radical Islam

Written by Starla M. Brown on . Posted in Staff Op-Eds

They only respect strength were the words of a political commentator today while discussing the violent murder of U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens and embassy staff members.  Given the barbaric nature of radical Muslims who daringly stormed a US Embassy and committed horrific acts of violence and murder, I will wholeheartedly agree.

The notion that these individuals were somehow offended by a social media post that hurt the feelings of those whose religion was "denigrated" by such, and then led to a perceived right to commit murder should be a wake up call.  Americans the hatred of radical Islam towards us is beyond comprehension.  We are not programmed to think as they do, not brainwashed into such a radical state of existence that we as rational sane individuals could even begin to come close to understanding their actions.  Strength in our foreign policy is indeed the only thing they will understand, and we as Americans need to make sure we do not elect a president or congress that is weak on foreign policy.  The future of our national security depends on it.

Both Christians and Jews will find mockery on Facebook and certainly groups who spew hatred towards our religions, but the difference between radical Islam and us can be summed up by noting they are barbaric, we are not.  This Arab Spring seen through the eyes of the Obama Administration as the Middle East freedom fest is simply not the case.  It has produced loosely governed nations, chaos and an opportunity for the Muslim Brotherhood to become more powerful.  Each event of violence will only escalate the hatred.  Simply put they want to kill those who are not like them and who speak out against their perverted form of the Muslim religion.

As the chaos spread to Cairo and our flag was burned and replaced with a black banner, many questions continue to swirl around these events.  POTUS and the administration apologized to Muslims for an offensive social media post in an attempt to halt the escalating riots by those offended.  Political correctness and apologies are not working Obama.  Stop the campaign and send a message not of contrived rhetoric, but rather of strength.  Reagan understood peace through strength, why can't you?
